imagine what if it were possible for you to speak jewelry designs into existence using only your words if it were possible for you to dream up and speak these jewelry designs into existence using only your words and pull amazing unique jewelry designs out of The Ether that no one has ever seen before my name is Jesse Korby and I am the co-founder and creative director here at Jewelers advantage and in today's video we are here to talk about AI powered Jewelry Design This is the single biggest disruption in the history of the jewelry industry period full stop this is bigger than 3D CAD this is bigger than 3D printing in an industry that is among the oldest on Earth that has survived the Industrial Revolution through the digital age AI for jewelry design is the single biggest disruption out of everything that has ever happened and in today's video we are going to give you a comprehensive glimpse into what is possible with AI jewelry design and the mental model that you can take into this new world and we are here to make sure that you can capitalize on this big change in the industry that is absolutely going to decide who stays in business who emerges and comes to power in the new industry it's all going to be because of AI and if you're here today you are going to be able to take advantage of that so let's go back in history a little bit just to make some sense as to why I'm talking about this I've done other videos about my full story but just as a reminder I've been using AI for Creative projects since back in 2016 I got my start in the music industry and I worked at a recording studio where I first started experimenting with AI for photo editing and this was back before the AI Revolution but the seed was planted and I kept a relationship with AI for creativity this whole way and what that led to eventually was me doing a collaboration with a celebrity jeweler in New York City and it's very likely that Max from trackx NYC and I collaborated on the first AI jewelry piece without even realizing it this is in 2020 during Co and my first AI custom was a photo pendant you can see here which was just an edit on a tiger to make the piece look higher value and we ended up selling this for quite a bit of money again Max is probably the first Jeweler to sell an AI jewelry piece but a lot has happened since then so we're here to talk about what AI power jewelry design means for you and your business and your career in the jewelry industry and we're going to cover a couple of key points number one what is actually happening with the AI a lot of people have asked us at Jeweler's advantage to explain the process so that you can understand the AI a bit more this isn't super necessary in order to use it but it is going to help you if you can get an idea of what is happening with the image that is coming into being by using using our AI so we're going to cover that we're going to cover what is my spectrum of control how much control are we giving the AI are we giving absolute control over the process with minimal human input or are we trying to take command of the AI and use it like a paintbrush we're going to get into that and then finally how does this help my business as a jeweler it's not just an art project we're not just here to create beautiful Imes this industry is really interesting because you have to create a physical product so unlike other industries that are going to get disrupted wholesale by AI we have some protection in jewelry because we are Tethered to the value of gold people buy the product for emotional reasons it's an expensive product that requires humans to sell it and so on so this is a beautiful place to be for using AI for Creative projects because you're going to be well protected and you can still leverage your expertise as a jeweler and maintain your Artistic integrity while leveraging Ai and that's what we're going to get into today so the first question that we should answer when getting into AI for jewelry design is what is happening during diffusion this word diffusion is something that you're going to see when you're working with AI for any type of image generator so diffusion models work by destroying training data by adding noise and then learn to recover the data by reversing this noising process in other words diffusion models can generate coherent images from noise what does this mean what is actually happening so you'll notice here that in a diffusion process we might start with an actual image of real jewelry this is how the AI learned it introduce noise to existing images and break them down and essentially destroy them until it looked like the noise or the snow on an old TV set and then when generating an image it's doing the same process in Reverse it's starting from noise and then distilling down that noise into a tangible visible image so in both diffusion and generation processes these processes are both influenced by language so if you want to get an idea of what's happening these images would have had language attached to them in their original files during the training process when the image was being broken down into noise so this language acted as an anchor that the AI learned from and attached meaning to these images therefore when you use language in the generation process it's happening in Reverse it's using words to identify patterns and combine words that would have been introduced during the training process possibly over billions and billions of images to create something entirely new it's a miracle of science if you really think about it so the takeaway here is that AI makes sense of the world through language and so do humans words organized in time and space is what's allowing you to understand what I am saying right now this is actually a principle from Eastern philosophy in which we make sense of the world through language in linear SpaceTime it sounds heavy but it's actually how you understand what I'm saying right now words in sequence are coming together in time and you understand what I am saying AI makes sense of the world the the same way so keep this in mind this is a core principle that you'll need to understand when creating with AI and we'll come back down to earth in just a second but there's also a principle from quantum physics that is very interesting in this context there was an experiment in quantum physics called the double slit experiment which more or less proved the observer effect what they did was they took an electron beam gun and shot electrons through these slits in a card that were going to land on a screen and what they found was that an experiment yields different results when observed by a human so the electrons were sent through this card and the placement of those particles that they measured over time landed a particular way that was very different if humans were watching the process happen it's kind of crazy but in spiritual circles they say that this science experiment more or less proves that Consciousness creates reality and at the very least it proves that a human observing an experiment Alters the results of that experiment if that's more suitable for you as a lesson keep this in mind when working with AI generators because I don't have anything quantitative to measure this but as far as my own quality qualitative experience in working with AI image generators and especially with jewelry design leveraging AI there is something to the observer effect that is happening when you try out this technology so experiment with this now we'll come back down to earth so let's get into the spectrum of control that you have over this process you're going to see here on the screen that we have a Continuum of sorts taking shape with artificial intell Ence on the left and the human being on the right and you're going to have a spectrum of towards the left that's more AI Control towards the right that is complete human control and that's going to be important here for understanding how you can approach using AI for your design process we're going to cover three main ways there's going to be various approaches that you can do in between all of these and as the technology improves and develops there's probably going to be countless ways that you can use AI for jewelry design but if this is new for you let's start with three core fundamentals starting with text to image so with text to image the core principle here is that you dream up new ideas using only words if you've heard of the term prompt engineering before that is popular in generative AI for various uses that just means that you're typing in words and the AI is interpreting these words and creating an image through that diffusion process or in this case it's like reverse diffusion and its generation as you can see in the image this is a pretty good representation of what's happening it's kind of pulling the pixels together out of The Ether and forming something based on your description which you can get very very creative with so text to image is amazing for combining complex ideas into a unique jewelry design and it's also great for maintaining brand identity across collections so if you have a defined brand we talk about the brand prism in a lot of our content here at Jeweler's Advantage if you have that defined in words that means that you can create a whole collection really quickly in under an hour you could create an entire brand collection with a unified concept just because of words and how AI is using these words to create meaning through the visual in this case a jewelry design text to image is pretty much endless and this is going to be the first place a lot of you start because it's very hands-off you just type what you want to the ai ai interprets the idea and presents you with a design this is what's happening when you ask for a particular design in the jeweler's advance Vantage AI it's a great place to start in the middle of the spectrum of control you would have a seed image and Seed images are great because it's like a balanced collaboration with the AI through either a vision feature or some type of diffusion feature where you're teaching the AI write them what type of image you want to create and it will reference that image so it's providing a creative constraint with a reference image which is cool because you can help guide the AI to the type of visual aesthetic that you're trying to do and some AI tools like Jeweler's Advantage have a vision component where you can upload an image into the chat window and simply get the AI to describe what it sees and then using that language you can then move on to creating more designs or other tools like mid Journey require a seed image where you upload an image and it'll essentially train the AI really quick on that image and then give you an output the idea here is that you have a creative constraint which for people in the Arts you understand what that means it's kind of the bumper lanes that allow you to control your idea and focus your idea and from there you can then create variations on a specific idea or theme so it's just taking a reference image this can be great for when you're doing Customs as well if you have some creative freedom so here's seed images in action I personally like seed images and think that they're great for transforming sketches into tangible ideas so in this example the idea was pretty complex how do we make an engagement ring based on the Garden of Eden we want to have a serpent in there we want to have a red heart-shaped gemstone being presented more as the Apple from that famous story so here you can see I drew a terrible drawing where it's kind of serpent like kind of apple like and then the AI is able to interpret that very basic drawing and then create an AI design out of the seed image in this case it was using a vision feature to do so and then from there you just let the AI create we recommend going with lots and lots of generations and then curating down and what you'll probably counter from time to time is the AI can get a little bit carried away which if you're wanting to see something really ambitious is great sometimes it's fun to push the boundaries of what's possible and just see what is out there but in other cases you're trying to create something functional that will be a good product that people will want to buy so that way you can make some sales so in that case if you ever need to scale down from a text to image render of jewelry or maybe it's a seed image and it still got carried away in the AI you can simply just ask the AI make it more minimalist in our tool at ruler's advantage and you'll see what happens with the more complex images on the left finding a ground in reality with the images on the right so whether it was this crazy engagement ring or this pearl ring that was inspired by indras pearls a concept from India those two rings found their ground in a more realistic sense in the images on the right the one on the left that's more of a Lotus that might not even really be jewelry was meant to take inspiration from an art Jeweler like Wallace Chan but this was going to be kind of an impossible piece to make and asking the AI to make it more minimalist created this very functional design that still captured the essence of the idea here so a common criticism of AI jewelry design usually comes from the purists and the people that are kind of old school and they'll say something like hey cool AI design but how are you going to make the piece make it more minimalist as your command to the AI is your way that you can bring it down into reality and that more or less completely makes that criticism a non-factor now your third option is very interesting for people that want to have some creative control and this would be in painting so in painting you can think of this as identifying a spot in the actual design that you want to have a precise edit on within the AI and certain AIS have this feature that allow you to do this in Leonardo they have a canvas feature which allows for realtime adjustments for ultimate control and this allows you to blend your human creativity with AI efficiency quality and speed and the the Fe feature in that particular tool in Leonardo AI there's another one called Kaa that has this same feature and we're probably going to see lots and lots of AI image tools all roll out this canvas feature in time it more or less feels like you're in Microsoft Paint from back in the 90s and you can draw your terrible computer drawings that will then manifest as a good AI drawing or you can edit existing images and so on other AI tools also have an in painting feature where you isolate a box of the design you just kind of draw around what you're trying to change and then you can make changes with a prompt within the field that you've identified so in painting is kind of broad but it belongs on the far right side of the spectrum of control which allows you to make precise edits to your AI image so this is ideal for intricate client requests during a custom sale if somebody is really particular you can make the changes right then on the fly but you're just going to want to also be mindful that there's going to be a gap for you to sell with no matter what you're always going to have to manage customer expectations because when they're buying custom jewelry it's not like selling them a piece of jewelry over the counter you have to create the awareness that there is a gap this is going to deviate from what you're seeing on the screen and you're in good hands you can trust me I'm a professional Jeweler that is going to be how you have to handle a custom sale using AI whether you're completely on the Left End of the Spectrum in using just text to image and creating options to get the customer to choose from or if you're in the middle and you're using seed images perhaps something that the customer provided and you drum up multiple options with AI to get them to loosen their grip a little bit on what they think they're getting or want to get or maybe you're able to present something unique that way or if you're all the way on the right and you're with a difficult customer and for whatever reason you need precise control or maybe this is something that's important to you as a jeweler you would be using in painting features all the way to the right end of the spectrum no matter what the case is you have to think of this as a relationship if you think of the AI as a software tool you might end up being disappointed this is the kind of thing where you hear people talk about AI being hype AI is is not hype when you hear people say this it's a Telltale sign that they don't know how to use it so my advice to you would be to think of this as a relationship you're collaborating with the AI the exact same way that you would collaborate with a designer and communicate with them and explain what you want and get feedback from them and give iterations on what they should be doing your relationship with AI is practically the same as this it's just a robot which is cool so what you could do if you want to really unlock this is think of AI as an amplifier of human intelligence imagine for a second that you were a guitar player playing electric guitar if that guitar wasn't plugged in it wouldn't be very loud but all of a sudden when you plug that guitar into a guitar amplifier you're amplifying the signal it gets louder the sound can carry further f faster that is what AI is it's an amplifier of human intelligence you can think of it as having a left brain and a right brain this is how we make this viable for a business on the left brain side you have your CEO or your CTO or whatever you're business-minded analytical thinker and then on the right hand side we have your creative director what if you had Bernard Arno and Tom Ford in the same company collaborating together and then Amplified it and just made it better faster smarter cheaper that what type of gold or silver or platinum do we use what type of gemstones do we use lab diamonds are becoming very popular it's disrupting the entire thing disrupting the entire Market the entire history of the industry so in order to sell in a world where you can no longer attack your Sal strategy to just the commodity value of the product Oh it's diamonds and gold so it's expensive that's all going out the window the way that you're going to counteract that is that you need to have a strong brand identity which will come off the back of your brand prism that will help you determine what type of materials you are using to align with the brand prism and then we need a secret ingredient we need a creative concept that you can use to tell a story about your brand and product to drive emotion that is going to be how we get away from our dependency in this industry on natural diamonds to do our sales for us no longer going to be able to let natural diamonds do our sales for us so we're going to have to become great storytellers through the brand prism and the Creative Concepts of our product that are anchored by the materials from there I have a question for you what will
